The wait is over: The UK's Prince William and Kate Middleton, both 28, officially announced their engagement on November 16, 2010. The two, having been a couple on and off for eight years, will marry next spring or summer after Prince William proposed while on holiday in Kenya in October.
Prince William proposed to Kate using the18-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring that belonged to his mother Princess Diana, saying: "It’s very special to me. As Kate’s very special to me now, it was right to put the two together.”
So how does the ring look like? It's a dazzling oval blue sapphire ring encircled by 14 beautiful white diamonds. Diana, who died in 1997, chose the elegant cluster ring after becoming engaged to Charles in 1981. Prince William told the press how he carried the ring around in the royal rucksack for about three weeks before he chose the right time to propose while the the two vacationed in Kenya. He said he knew he would be in trouble if he lost it, so he held onto it tightly.
Hours after news of their royal engagement broke, Prince William and Kate Middleton appeared for the first time as an engaged couple during a photo call at St. James's Palace – and her ring was on view.
